Log book 2010

A long cold winter again

From the beginning of December it was freezing constantly. A lot of snow and ice in the whole country; especially in the East en North-east part of the country. In January everybody was hoping that there Will be an 'Eleven-city-tour' in the Netherlands ; the world's largest and longest speed skating competition, is held irregularly in the province of Friesland, Netherlands.

The water in the Stellendam marina is brackish water and for that reason rarely freezes. The Echoes stayed during the winter in the water.

Looking forward to spring

Summer holiday 2010

We call it our summer holiday but it was still spring.

Last year we planned to go on holiday to Denmark. We did not come further then the Netherlands Wadden Islands, because of the wind.
This year we wanted to go the England, Belgium, France and maybe to the Canal Islands. We want to spend 4 weeks on our boat.

On Saturday we went to the Echoes, did some small repairs and maintenance. The next day there was a strong wind and heavy rain from the South West. We decided to depart on Monday, although the waves were quit high 2 to 3 meter, but wind from the North west. Because of the strong wind we sailed to Blankenberge (Belgium) on the genoa sail. In total we sailed 55 NM. Hennie was a little seasick, but a soon she touched the ground in Belgium she felt immediately better.
The forecast for Tuesday was 'light airs' so we decided to sail across the North sea directly to Dover. The wetter was good, but the visibility was poor. The water temperature is still low and without any sunshine it felt very cold. On our way we took some nice photos of the Goodwin lightship. The White cliffs we saw for the first time 5 miles before Dover. The distance from Blankenberge to Dover was 70,22 NM.

On Wednesday we spend some time in Dover. The sun was shining the whole day and it was a very relaxing day.

Thursday morning at 06.30 AM the alarm clock did us wake up. We need the sail early because we wanted to make use of the tide. But first we filled up the diesel tank (red diesel). We received a receipt we might need to show the Dutch customs. The trip the Sovereign (Eastbourne) went very smoothly and fast. The Echoes was the fastest boat of all the sailing boats that departed form Dover and arrived at the lock at 16.15 PM.

The next day to Brighton. Again a beautiful day. Unfortunately there was not much wind. The same weather for the trip on Saturday to Cowes. Amazing to see how precisely the chart plotter calculated the trip. Boulderstreet was found very easily. It was a little bit hazy during our and the temperature was very pleasant. We arrive in Cowes at 15.30 hrs. Was started at 07.15 in the morning.
It was very crowded on the Solent waters. A lot of sailing boats and ferries.
The Solent is a real paradise for yachtsmen and -women. We have got a nice berth in the Shepards Marina. After one hour the marina was full.
On Sunday we stayed on the island Wight and were quite lazy.

morning.

On Monday we sailed to Poole where we stayed in the Poole Marina. Although it was a modern marina, there was no electricity. We stayed one night and decided to sail at night to the island of Guernsey. The first few hours the stream was against. But after midnight
